“As a digital artist, I’ve been playing with pixels for more than 20 years. However, as time passed and computers got faster, our goal was to make the pixels disappear — the higher the resolution, the less likely you were to see the individual pixels that created the image. I’ve always been a fan of 8-bit art and retro video games so I created a new series of works that celebrate the pixels and let them be part of the final image. It’s a type of modern impressionism where the complete image is better seen from a distance. In addition to enjoying the look of the pixels, painting them has become kind of meditative for me. It’s also just fun to use a traditional medium like watercolor to create an image that looks computer generated.

The portraits I painted for this series are of people I admire, people whose music or acting I enjoy, and just people who simply make me smile. I also included some of my favorite cartoon and video game characters because who doesn’t love the StayPuft Marshmallow Man?”
